PH2005 Brief: Assignment 1

PROJECT TITLE: ‘FASHION BRANDING AND PHOTOGRAPHY – GROUP PROJECT: THE EMERGING DESIGNER’


Introduction:

A new emerging designer needs campaign imagery to launch their new label to the industry and general public. The client needs a group of creatives to research and develop an original concept, and then to produce preliminary images for them to consider and provide feedback as to whether they would take the project further to commission stage. (In terms of the brief, this ends at the client feedback stage). The client will set you a brief that outlines what they need and to state key objectives that need to be applied. You will then interpret the brief using your own creative skills and imagination for the client.

AIMS:

  • Extend your range of practical skills and critical understanding of photographic practices, to enable advanced levels of photographic image making centered on corporate branding and product advertising
  • To develop group working skills and how to collaborate on conceptual and production ideas
  • To develop professional research skills for the production of client specific imagery
  • Use visual communication skills learned to develop commercial advertising photographs
  • To develop practical studio and location based skills for the production of professional level imagery
  • To develop organizational skills and how to present as part of a group.

BRIEF: Students must complete the following stages for Assignment 1:

As a group you will learn the client’s brief and produce relevant research that will help you develop a concept.
Communicate to decide which roles each team member should undertake as part of the production team.
Develop initial ideas and imagery to progress your concept in a creative and professional manner.
Create an exciting group presentation to introduce your campaign ideas, and to gain feedback from your client.
Produce preliminary images – a series of professional but introductory images (minimum of 6) that could be commissioned and developed further into a campaign for your client.


Note - students should include their preliminary images at the end of their blog and also digitally on a CD labelled with all the names of your group, module code and Assignment number (1). Each of the images should be placed in a separate folder. Each folder should contain a high-resolution image (300ppi) for printing to 12x16 and a low-resolution image (72ppi) for screen use.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: On completion of this Assignment you should be able to:

             1.   Research, develop and evaluate ideas independently
2.     Undertake professionally based briefs, including designing, styling and executing commercially relevant projects
4.     Demonstrate professional level skills in the planning and execution of a complex client based brief in a limited time scale

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1.     A BLOG SHOWING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT –

The degree to which you have researched with imagination and developed ideas and a concept that shows innovation.
The degree to which your research, ideas and developed concept are relevant to the client and fulfils their needs.
The degree to which you analyse and critique groups decisions and evaluate your outcome.
The degree of professionalism that you apply to developing your concept into preliminary images.
This makes up 80% of your mark.

2.     GROUP SEMINAR PRESENTATION OF PROJECT –

The degree to which you are able to prepare and present your project for your client and explain why this could be produced to become a successful campaign for them.
This makes up 20% of your mark.

MINIMUM TANGIBLE EVIDENCE OF STUDY

-        A blog that documents your group research and development
             -     A group presentation of your campaign imagery and concept.

-     A preliminary set of photographic images (minimum of 6).
